The single-cab decision tree
Single-cab pickups are unusual because the normal “put children in the rear seat” recommendation cannot be followed. That means you have to answer several vehicle-specific questions before installation: Is there a designated passenger seating position? What does the truck manual say about child restraints? Is there a frontal passenger air bag, and can it be deactivated in a manner the manufacturer recognizes? Is there a top-tether anchor for forward-facing use? Does the restraint manual permit the planned installation?
Single-cab safety worksheet
Use the truck and car-seat manuals while completing this. The tool intentionally produces “unresolved” rather than guessing.
Why the passenger air bag matters so much
In a rear-facing seat, the back of the child restraint sits close to the dashboard. A frontal air bag deploys with enormous speed into that same space. That is why both NHTSA and the AAP state that a rear-facing child restraint should never be placed in front of an active frontal passenger air bag.
Do not assume an “occupant sensing” light means the air bag will always remain off with a particular child restraint. Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions for the exact truck.
Forward-facing tether routing in pickups
Pickup trucks can use tether loops or routing paths that look different from passenger-car anchors. Do not improvise around a seat frame or cargo hook. The vehicle manual should identify the approved tether anchor and, where applicable, the route through or around loops behind the seatback.
When the better answer is a different vehicle
If the passenger-airbag status is unresolved, the vehicle manual does not permit the planned restraint, or the required tether/seat-belt setup cannot be achieved, use another vehicle with an appropriate rear seating position. The inconvenience is much smaller than turning an unresolved installation into a daily routine.
